On Wednesday, December 5th, all the southbound lanes were shut down on I-285, with traffic being completely stopped during rush hour. Fulton County police received a call about a shooting just north of the I-20 interchange at 4 pm. It is confirmed that a man was found shot in the chest, dead, on the interstate shoulder near Hollowell Parkway. The shooter, who was in a different car, stayed on the scene and did not try to run away. He was taken into custody by the police and is being held while they try to figure out how and why he did this.

At this point the shooter’s name has not been released and there is no motivation for this man’s actions. It doesn’t seem to be road rage, and the shooter did not know the victim. A police spokesman has made a comment that, “we are not releasing the name of the suspect while our investigators look into possible connections with other crimes. No other information, including a possible motive, will be released yet.” All southbound lanes were shut down from 4:30 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., and even after they were opened back up traffic was still heavy and slow. The victim’s body was taken to a medical examiner. He was identified by the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office as 51-year-old Oswald Cunningham of Atlanta.
