On Monday, December 3rd, Lionel Messi was awarded the Balon d’Or. If you don’t know, the Balon d’or is a yearly trophy which is awarded to the best player of the year. This one was Messi’s sixth, meaning he had just broken another record. No other player had ever won six Balon d’ors until Messi did. Last year, the award was given to Luka Modric, meaning the 10-year duality between Messi and Ronaldo had ended. Before this year’s, the last time Messi won the award was back in 2015. After 2015, Ronaldo won 2016 and 2017, while Modric won the award in 2018.

As Messi and Ronaldo both get older and older, both of their careers are winding down. They both will likely play for a few more seasons until they inevitably retire. Question are slowly arising for the 2022 World Cup now. Only 2 ½ years remain and fans are wondering if Messi and Ronaldo will even be of age to star in Qatar’s World Cup. There’s also been an argument on whether or not the World Cup should be held in Qatar, but I believe the arguments won’t amount to anything because the stadiums have already been built.
