Greta Thunberg Named As Time’s POTY, To Trump’s Dismay

Earlier this week, Time magazine named 16-year-old climate crisis activist Greta Thunberg as their Person of the Year. Other contenders for the title were Donald Trump, Nancy Pelosi, the Hong Kong protesters, and Trump’s Whistleblower. Donald Trump reacted on Thursday by tweeting, “So ridiculous. Greta must work on her Anger Management problem, then go to a good old fashioned movie with a friend! Chill Greta, Chill!” Greta responded to this advice by amending her Twitter bio to read: “A teenager working on her anger management problem. Currently chilling and watching a good old fashioned movie with a friend.”

This is not the first interaction between President Trump and Thunberg. In September, Trump tweeted, “She seems like a very happy young girl looking forward to a bright and wonderful future. So nice to see!” The tweet was in regard to a video of Thunberg’s speech at the UN Climate Action Summit that she gave after a two-week transatlantic boat voyage from Sweden to NYC. In her speech, she scolded politicians for running on fairytales of eternal economic growth and ignoring the impending potential mass extinction. She scolded politicians for robbing her of her future and forcing her to convince them of the severity of the climate crisis. Similar to how she responded to Trump this Thursday, Thunberg responded to Trump’s September mockery by altering her Twitter bio to read: “A very happy young girl looking forward to a bright and wonderful future.”

Time’s article depicts Greta and the cause she is championing. It gives a detailed timeline of where things began and the measures she has taken to bring awareness to the climate crisis. Despite the challenges she faces from politicians who have little belief in her or her cause, Thunberg has set out to make a difference and she will not stop until she has fulfilled that goal.
