Atlanta United Keeps on Winning!

On Tuesday, August 27th, Atlanta United beat Minnesota United 2-1 to claim the US Open Cup, earning their third trophy in 8 months. The US Open Cup win came off of a high time for Atlanta, as they had just won the Campeones Cup a week before the US Open Cup win.

Goals for Atlanta consisted of one own goal and a strike from Pity Martinez. The own goal came in only the 10th minute when LGP’s cross into the box deflected off a Minnesota defender and slipped into the goal. Pity Martinez doubled the lead in the 16th minute. Though Minnesota did get one back quickly in the second half, it proved utterly useless.

When the whistle blew at the end of the game, Atlanta’s coach and staff ran onto the field to celebrate with the players on the field, as the Minnesota players were slumped down onto the field. Many Atlanta players comforted the unfortunate losers and made way for the trophy lift. Michael Parkhurst did the honors for the second time and lifted the Lamar Hunt Trophy.

With that win, Atlanta automatically qualified for next year’s CONCACAF Champions League. Many people have begun to theorize that Atlanta and LAFC will play in the final of this year’s MLS Cup Final, which is seeming more and more likely by the day. The MLS regular season is coming to a close soon, which means the MLS Playoffs are right around the corner. Will Atlanta reign as champions for two years in a row? Will they claim first in the East for a quarter-final bypass? These are questions all fans want to be answered but can’t worry about as Atlanta is coming up to their toughest stretch of games soon.
