With the 2020 Presidential Race in full bloom, candidates are eager to share their thoughts and opinions. With the growing popularity of some candidates, some have resorted to more avant-garde tactics to survive in the race.

Take Beto O’Rourke, a democrat from El Paso, Texas running for president. After slow progress in the polls, his team had to come up with some new tactics to spark his popularity in the media. O’Rourke has had some quarrels with Trump lately, with his stand on border control being about the opposite of Trump’s vision. In the article, “The Art of Giving a Damn,” O’Rourke answered, when asked about the topic of Trump’s opinions on the wall, “You know the sh*t’s he’s been saying. He’s been calling Mexican immigrants rapists and criminals” (Garber 1).

Although shocking at first, this tactic of being more outspoken and, for lack of a better term, vulgar, has brought in more supporters for O’ Rourke and has sparked more publicity in the media around him. Debates and interviews are so genteel and formal, whereas using vulgar language can add more emotion and can connect to Americans more. According to the polls, his tactic has increased his polling, being a more popular contender after becoming more profane in his language. Though somewhat appalling at first, this tactic worked positively for O’ Rourke and did spark popularity about him in the media.
