People have been using recreational and medical marijuana for many years. Different states within the U.S have been fighting for the use of marijuana to become legalized for decades. Ten states have legalized marijuana completely, twenty-five have partially legalized marijuana, and in sixteen states, marijuana remains completely illegal. Georgia being one of the states where marijuana is completely illegal, is currently working on the legalization of the drug. Just this Tuesday, March 5, 2019, the Georgia House passed a bill that is allowing registered patients to use medical marijuana.

The whole topic of marijuana got me thinking, what do the students of Northgate think about the matter. I asked some students and teachers if they think marijuana should be legalized in the state of Georgia. A lot of students and teachers had the same answer. As stated by Lexi Hennig, senior at Northgate High school, “Medical marijuana, like anything in this world, has the tendency to be abused. It has the tendency to become an addiction. However, this does not mean that it will become this way 100% of the time. Medical Marijuana has been proven to help several patients with pain surrounding anxiety and cancer. In that way, it benefits people tremendously. The question isn’t of – should this drug be legal because of the pros and cons, but the question of – are we as people willing to accept the cons to receive the pros? In life everything is a risk, regardless.”

Marijuana gives you a relaxed feeling. Marijuana has been proven to help cancer patients, HIV patients, chronic pain patients, those suffering from anxiety, etc. Although there are risk factors such as addiction, the health benefits are well worth the risk. Depending on the strain, marijuana can help with sleeping, staying up, feeling energized, or remaining relaxed. It is my utmost belief that marijuana should be legalized due to the variety of health benefits.
