This past year, the popular game, Fortnite, has gained a huge amount of popularity. But many people wonder how the game snowballed into fame. For starters, the game has two modes: Save The World and Battle Royale. The Battle Royale mode is the much more popular game, even though it hasn’t been out nearly as long as the Save The World mode. The Battle Royale mode is what’s been so popular to kids and adults alike.

The first step in understanding the success of Fortnite is to understand the type of game it is. Battle royale games are often very similar, consisting of one large map, and dropping many players into it together, and forcing them to collect loot and fight each other with the weapons that they find. The twist that Fortnite puts on the battle royale genre of game is the element of building. In Fortnite, trees and rocks and steel can be mined, granting materials, which can be used for building. Building adds an entirely new spectrum to battle royale games, that no other game offers currently.

Another huge reason for the success of Fortnite is the skins you can purchase from within the game. The thrill of buying a new skin in the game gives the player a sense of establishment within the community. Once you have a skin, you are no longer considered a “noob,” or an inexperienced player. The thrill of new skins encourages purchases by the community. This is the main source of income for Epic Games, the company who developed Fortnite.

The success of Fortnite is largely induced by the in-game purchases, the largely creative innovation it brings to the battle royale genre, and the thrill of getting a win against others.
