Baker Mayfield became the sixth University of Oklahoma player to capture the Heisman trophy. Mayfield, the Oklahoma quarterback who started his college football career as a walk on at Texas Tech, captured the 83rd Heisman Trophy after transfering to OU. He is the first ever player to win the trophy as a walk-on. Mayfield became the first senior to win the trophy since Bradford in 2008.

Mayfield, scoring 732 first place votes and 2,398 points in the voting total, scored the third-highest percentage possible points received since 1950. “This is unbelievable for me, being up among these greats.” Baker said upon receiving the award, “It’s something words can’t even describe. God has put me in this position that I’m so blessed, and a lot of times I wonder why. But it’s such an honor to be up here. It’s unbelievable.”

Mayfield has put together one of the most impressive individual offensive seasons in the game’s history, and has led the OU team to the College Football Playoffs. The OU team will soon be up against The Georgia Bulldogs at the Rose Bowl on New Year’s Day. Congrats to Baker Mayfield, the sixth OU player to win the Heisman Trophy and the 2017, and winner of the 83rd Heisman Trophy.
