On Sunday, November 5, 26 people were killed and 20 more were injured in the second deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history, which was carried out by Devin Kelley, 26. The shooting took place at First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Texas. It was the deadliest shooting in the state’s history. Victims range from age 18 months to 77 years old.

The suspect was spotted at a gas station across the street from the church at about 11:20 a.m. local time the morning of the shooting. Kelley left and crossed the street to the church. He exited his vehicle and began firing his weapon, an AR-556 semi automatic rifle, before he even entered the church. The spray of his gun killed nearly half of the congregation. Among the deceased was the suspect’s grandmother-in-law and the 14-year-old daughter of the church’s pastor, Frank Pomeroy. The shooting devastated the community of less than a 1,000 and took roughly 4% of their overall population.

According to officials, the attack was not racially or religiously motivated, but was considered a “domestic situation.” Kelley’s mother-in-law, who had attended the church, had been receiving aggressive and threatening texts from the suspect.

Johnnie Langendorff, a local resident, chased down the shooter. “I just did what I thought was right,” said Langendorff when asked why he chose to pursue the suspect. Devin Kelley was later found dead in his vehicle after a car chase. It is unknown if he killed himself or was killed by police at this time.
