White Supremacists flocked to Charlottesville, Virginia the weekend of August 12th to protest the removal of a statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee, and were met by counter-protesters who opposed the Far-Right group. However, the peaceful counter-protest soon turned tragic after a car plowed through the counter-protesters, leaving one person dead and several others injured.

Heather Hyer, a 32 year old counter-protester, died after being struck by the vehicle. A 20-year-old suspect, James Alex Fields, from Ohio, has been arrested on suspicion of second-degree murder. President Donald Trump commented, “We condemn in the strongest possible terms this egregious display of hatred, bigotry and violence on many sides… The hate and the division must stop right now,” he said. “We have to come together as Americans with love for our nation.” Virginia’s Governor Terry McAuliffe later made a statement, saying to the right-wing protesters, “Go home… You are not wanted in this great commonwealth. Shame on you.”
